Inspiration of 5th & 6th Series….

More on the evolution of practicing master Mark Togni, who has been teacher / mentor /spiritual guide, and constant source of inspiration for many years.

Mark, a Zen Buddhist Monk for over 20 years and Yoga practitioner for over 30, weaves wisdom into each encounter with humility, directness and often humour, he can be tough too but sometimes that's also needed.

Mark has researched the Ashtanga Yoga method drawing on his wealth of personal practice and that of teaching. He has had decades exploring Advanced A and B, and made a video of Fourth Series.

After many years Mark felt the need to go deeper in his practice and so using his experiences from living in India, his research and many of his notes he first experimented, eventually compiling a comprehensive, cohesive and fully functioning 5th and 6th series experiencing first hand the powerful depth of these two Advanced Series, Sthira Bhaga Samapta C and D. He has gained full confidence that the practice leads those who are dedicated to life of freedom.

Now, there are many teachers who can instruct you with Asana, but a great teacher will help you unveil your full potential. The Mysore room at the Gold Coast Yoga Centre where Mark teaches every week is a powerful and steamy affair, the practitioners are amongst the most advanced, this is largely due to Mark's unwavering determination to help each of his students to find their own internal freedom through their practice not just on the mat. He intuitively know when a student is ready to advance on to a new posture, or needs to work right where they’re at, either way it’s with the encouragement of a gentle father to practice earnestly as if in prayer.

As the practice deepens into Advanced C and D we are assailed with every hidden demon that has been buried within us for perhaps lifetimes. Yet Asana is nothing without the inquiry of Svadhyaya, when Mara/Maya, which will surely be exposed, expresses itself in guises subtle or obvious having a teacher who is committed to the path alongside you is essential. The risk of getting lost is very real, you must have a guide, a master that has already tread the path, one who knows where you're at and is ready to shine the light on the less travelled, certainly difficult yet utterly rich, and deep practice.

So the relationship between teacher and student, Guru Shisya cannot be underestimated, in essence this is the practice. It determines how far or deep the understanding of oneself goes. Admittedly the dynamic can be fraught with all the tension and fire of a barroom brawl as well as that of a tranquil lake, it takes unlimited trust and understanding.
